Can Zakaat be given to a ‘Sayed’?
It is impermissible to give Zakaat or other Waajib (obligatory) charity (e.g. Fitrah, Kafaarah, etc.) to a Sayed or Banu Hashim. If Zakaat or Waajib charity is given to them, it will not be fulfilled.
Sayeds and Banu Hashim can be given Nafl (optional) charity.
In terms of this rule about Zakaat, a Sayed refers to a member of Rasoolullah’s (peace be upon him) family via the lineage of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Banu Hashim refers to the descendants of Hazrat Ali, Abbas, Ja’far, Aqeel and Haarith ibn Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them).

Sayyidunna Rasoolullah (peace be upon him) states,
“Verily this Sadaqaat (obligatory charity like Zakaat, Fitrah etc.) is the filth of (the wealth of) people and it is not permissible for Muhammed (peace be upon him) and the family of Muhammed (peace be upon him).”
