What is the ruling on observing Nafl (optional) fast on a Friday, this includes the Ayyaam-e-Beedh (the white days) i.e. the 13th, 14th and 15th of the Islamic month?
Hazrat Muhammed ibn Abbad Ja’far (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he asked the Sahabi, Hazrat Jaabir ibn Abdullah (Allah be pleased with him) whilst he was performing Tawaaf of the Ka’ba, “Did Rasoolullah (peace be upon him) prohibit fast on a Friday (specifically)?” He answered, “Yes, oath on the Lord of this house”.
(Sahih Muslim, Vol. 1, pg. 360-1, Published by Qadeemi Kutub Khana, Karachi)
لاَ يَصُمْ أَحَدُكُمْ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ إِلاَّ أَنْ يَصُومَ قَبْلَهُ أَوْ يَصُومَ بَعْدَهُ
Hazrat Abu Hurairah t reports the Holy Prophet m to have said, “None of you should keep fast (only) on Friday except that you keep fast a day before or after it.”
(ibid)
He also narrates the following Hadith, “…Do not particularize Friday for fasting amongst days except a person who continuously observes fast and Friday occurs.”
(ibid)
Based on these Ahadeeth, Fuqaha of the Shaf’ee and Hambali Mazhabs as well as Imam Abu Yusuf (Allah be pleased with them) f the Ahnaaf opine that it is Makrooh (disliked) to observe fast specifically on Friday.
Imaam Abu Hanifa, Maalik and Muhammed (Allah be pleased with them) opine that fasting on a Friday is permissible without any Karaahat (dislike).
If a person keeps fast of Ayyaam-e-Beedh (the white days) i.e. the 13th, 14th and 15th of the Islamic month and Friday occurs as one of the days, it is not Makrooh to keep fast on that Friday.
And Allah and His Rasool know best.
