I make Iftaar by first drinking juice but I was told I should first have dates and water. Is there anything incorrect if I don’t have dates and water first?
It is undoubtedly permissible to make Iftaar by eating or drinking any item of food or drink but our Beloved Prophet’s (peace be upon him) Sunnah (practice) was to make Iftaar by eating dates first and drinking water. Therefore, it is Masnoon (prophetic practice) to make Iftaar with dates and water first and indeed there is Barakah in doing so.
Hazrat Anas ibn Maalik (Allah be pleased with him) states,
كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يفطر قبل أن يصلي على رطبات، فإن لم تكن رطبات فتميرات فإن لم تكن تميرات حسا حسوات من ماء
Before performing Salaah, Rasoolullah (peace be upon him) would make Iftaar of his fast by eating fresh, ripe dates and if they were not found, he would eat dry dates. He would drink water if there were no dates at all.
