بِسْمِ ٱللّٰهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
I regularly attend a Sunni Musjid for Jummah Salaah and Al-Hamdulillah, Salaat-o-Salaam is recited after the Namaaz. It is my humble opinion that sending Durood and Salaam on our Beloved Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) after Jummah Salaah is a must for those who possess love for him. However, the Salaami which is recited after Salaah is very lengthy and we are working class people who have to return to work. I believe that there is nothing wrong with reciting a lengthy Salaami and it is extremely inappropriate to leave while it is being read. I have spoken about this to the brothers concerned but to no avail. Please comment in light of the Shariah.
Several prophetic traditions establish that people with needs should be catered for in Salaah. Some of these Ahadeeth follow:
- Rasoolullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has said, “When any of you lead people in Salaah, moderate it because they are made up of the sick, weak and elderly. When any of you perform Salaah alone he can lengthen it as much as he desires.” (Bukhari, Muslim with reference to Mishkaat, pg. 101)
- The Holy Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has said, “I commence Salaah and wish to prolong it but then I hear the cries of children. I then lessen my Salaah knowing that these cries are means of unease for the mothers of these children.” (Bukhari with reference to Mishkaat, pg. 101)
- Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates, “I have never performed Salaah behind an Imaam more moderate and complete than Rasoolullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). If he had to hear the cry of a child, he would lessen the Salaah fearing the mother of the child being grieved by it.” (Bukhari, Muslim with reference to Mishkaat, pg. 101)
There are many Ahadeeth besides these supporting the same but we present only the above for the sake of brevity. When command of lessening is given by Rasoolullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in a Fardh Ibaadat then this directive should definitely be related to Mustahab (preferable) acts also. Indeed, returning to work is a credible need that has to be accommodated. In fact, returning to work to acquire sustenance is a divine command from Allah ta’aala,
And when the prayer (Jummah) is completed, then disperse in the land.
(Surah Jumuah, Verse 10)
“Then disperse in the land” has been interpreted by the Ulema as, “One should disperse to seekone’s sustenance.”
(Tafseer Noorul Irfaan – Mufti Ahmed Yaar Khan Naeemi Ashrafi)
The Khalifa of Huzoor Hujjatul Islam Allama Haamid Raza Khan (may Allah be pleased with him), Muhadith-e-Azam Pakistan Allama Sardaar Ahmed Qadri Razvi (may Allah be pleased with them), is reported by Hazrat Moulana Abun Noor Muhammed Basheer to have the habit of saying to Naath reciters at the time of Qiyaam (Salaat-o-Salaam), “Recite two or three verses only.”
(Waaiz, Part 4, pg. 261)
The wisdom in this command of Huzoor Muhadith-e-Azam Pakistan (may Allah be pleased with him), is explained as follows, “Meaning that this Imaan enlivening recital of Salaam and the Qiyaam be completed within a short space of time with total Khushoo and Khuzoo (concentration and presence of heart). By this, no heart of those present will entertain the thought, “Allah knows when this will end!” Through such a thought, instead of reward, error will be accumulated.”
(ibid)
Allah and His Rasool know best.
