Can date pits, stones or beads be used to count the amount of times a Wazifa is recited?
It is permissible to use date pits etc. to count the amount of times a Wazifa is read.
عن سعد بن أبي وقاص رضي الله عنه أنه دخل مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم على امرأة وبين يديها نوى -أو حصى- تسبح به
Hazrat Sa’ad ibn Abi Waqqaas (Allah be pleased with him) narrates a Hadith wherein the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) visited a lady who had in front of her date pits or stones which she used to count the amount of times she recited Tasbeeh.
(Mishkaatul Masaabeeh, pg. 201 with reference to Abu Dawood and Tirmizi, published by Maktaba Millat, Deoband)
In the annotation of the above Hadith, Allamah Mulla Ali Qaari (Allah be pleased with him) states that by Rasoolullah (peace be upon him) not reproving this Sahaabiyah’s action (i.e. the usage of date pits or stones to count the amount of Tasbeeh) is proof of its permissibility. (Mirqaatul Mafaateeh, Vol. 5, pg. 139, published by Maktaba Haqqania, Pakistan)
This Hadeeth is classified as Hadeeth-e-Taqreeri in the terminology of the Muhaditheen (scholars of hadith).
Hakeemul Ummah Mufti Ahmed Yaar Khan Naeemi (Allah be pleased with him) states, “Some Shuyookh gather almonds or date pits in bags (to use as counters) to complete the recitation of a specific Qur’anic Ayah. This Hadeeth is their proof to do so.”
(Miratul Manaajeeh, Vol. 3, pg. 346, published by Zia-ul-Quraan Publications, Pakistan)
