بِسْمِ ٱللّٰهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Hello. I am a Christian man looking for some information. I have found many Islamic websites which speak zealously about the “miracles” in the Koran. After reading through most of them I must admit that the information is quite acute. However, what I have failed to find is any miracle which had come to pass during the lifetime of the Prophet Mohammed. I do understand that according to his sayings many miracles were performed in the presence of his followers, but I see no such miracle in the Koran. My question is this:
is there any verse in the Koran which can be regarded as a “miracle” which came to pass in the life of Mohammed or his companions?
- The answer to your question is definitely found in the Holy Qur’an. Before explaining it to you, let me begin by clarifying what a “Miracle” actually is.
Miracle: an effect or extraordinary event in the physical world that surpasses all known human or natural powers and is ascribed to a supernatural cause. (dictionary.com)
Many people regard miracles to be mind boggling events only. This is incorrect. A miracle does not have to be an event which was witnessed by a number of people for it to qualify as miraculous. A simple verse regarding future events is categorized as a miracle due it being against the law of nature by accurately foretelling an event in the near or distant future. This is more famously known as a “Prophecy”. There are a few prophecies in the Qur’an which had come to pass accurately. However, I will explain one which many Muslims have even forgotten.
Narrated by Hazrath Abdullah Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) with several chains of transmitters that when the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) was commanded to proclaim the message of Islam openly (as he was instructed in the Qur’an to warn first of all his nearest kinsmen of the punishment of God) he ascended Mount Safa one morning and called out aloud: “Ya Sabaahah” (O, the calamity of the morning!). This alarm in Arabia was raised by a person who noticed early at dawn an enemy tribe advancing against his tribe. When the Holy Messenger (peace be upon him) made this call, the people inquired as to who had made the call. They were told that it was Muhammad (peace be upon him). The clans of the Quraysh rushed out. Whoever was able to attend did so and whoever was unable sent forth a representative. When the people had assembled, the Holy Messenger (peace be upon him) began calling out each clan by name, viz. “O Bani Hashim, O Bani Abdul Muttalib, O Bani Fihr, O Bani so and so” and said: “If I were to tell you that behind the hill there was an enemy host ready to fall upon you, would you believe me?” The people responded in one voice saying that they had never experienced a lie from him. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Then I warn you that you are heading for a torment.” Thereupon, before anyone else could speak, Abu Lahab, the Holy Prophet’s uncle, said: “May you perish! Did you summon us for this?” Another tradition adds that he picked up a stone to throw at the Holy Prophet r
(Musnad of Imaam Ahmad, Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi, Ibn Jarir and others).
According to Hazrath Ibn Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him), one day Abu Lahab asked the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him): “If I were to accept your religion, what would I get?” The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “You would get what the other believers would get.” He said: “Is there no preference or distinction for me?” The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “What else do you want?” Thereupon he said: “May this religion perish in which I and all other people should be equal and alike!”
(Ibn Jarir).
In reply to his many blasphemous statements, Allah Almighty revealed the following verses:
“Perished were the hands of Abu Lahab and he was doomed to utter failure. His wealth and whatever he earned did not avail him anything. Certainly, he shall be cast into a blazing Fire. And his wife, too, the bearer of slander. Round her neck will be a rope of palm-fibre.”
(Surah Lahab, V.1-5)
The commentators of the Qur’an are in agreement that this chapter was revealed in the Meccan period. It was only after the migration to Makkah that Islam really began to flourish and it was during this Medinite period that Abu Lahab and his wife died. A basic analysis of the above verses tells us that this is indeed a prophecy. These verses were revealed whilst Abu Lahab and his wife were both alive and well in Makkah yet the verses are discussing their end result well before they had died. The Qur’an boldly declared that Abu Lahab and his wife would never embrace Islam (this is a prophecy as deals with a future event) and die as disbelievers.
This was indeed a bold statement. To declare the end result of a person, one needs to have a certain amount of credibility. In this case, the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) uttered these words of Allah Almighty and the end result was as clear as day!
History testifies to the fact that Abu Lahab never accepted Islam and was a fierce enemy of it. He would go around creating lies to assassinate the character of the Prophet r Thus according to the Islamic belief he will indeed taste the punishment of the hellfire. This is a prime example of the authenticity of the Qur’an. If the Qur’an was indeed what Abu Lahab said it was (false), then all Abu Lahab would have had to do to prove his claim was to embrace Islam and this would have rendered those verses void and it would have proven to be a false prophecy. However, this did not occur and he died in a most gruesome fashion to the extent that nobody wanted to go near his corpse due to the stench. This is not just a miracle in the Qur’an, but a miracle of the Qur’an.
Also, I would like to request that you read up on another prophecy which came to pass in the lives of the companions of the Beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) which is documented in the Qur’an in the opening verses of the 30th chapter titled “Ar-Room” (The Romans)
Allah Ta’ala grant us a deeper understanding
