Please can you clarify if it is permissible for us to give blood? I understand we may give blood but not body parts or organs. Can we give bone marrow?
Medical science has advanced greatly in our era of time. Progress in the field of medicine has created certainty that a patient’s life can be saved by the transfusion of blood, bone marrow or human organs (e.g. kidney) and the life of the donor is not harmed by his or her donation of blood etc. Therefore, it is permissible for Muslims to donate blood, bone marrow and human organs due to necessity and for the purpose of saving a life. This is allowed by the Shariah only out of need, when there is certainty that the life of the patient can be saved by doing so and there is no risk and harm to the life of the donor. Yes, the transfusion of blood and donation of an organ must not be for cosmetic purposes or financial gain. If this is the case then it is definitely not allowed. The donor should be Baaligh (mature), Aaqil (sane) and should not be compelled to do so.
