Did Hazrat Uthmaan (Allah be pleased with him) participate in the battle of Badr?
Ameerul Mumineen Hazrat Uthmaan ibn Affan (Allah be pleased with him) participated in every Ghazwa (a battle wherein the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) took part) except the battle of Badr. He did not take part in it because Rasoolullah (peace be upon him) commanded him to stay in Madinah Shareef and take care of his wife, Sayyida Ruqayyah (Allah be pleased with her) (the honourable daughter of Rasoolullah (peace be upon him)) who was sick during the event of Badr. He is however counted amongst those Sahaaba (Allah be pleased with them) who participated in the battle of Badr, he is blessed with the reward of one who took part in it and acquired a share (of war-booty) from this battle.
Hazrat Shah Waliyullah Muhaddith Dehlwi (Allah be pleased with him) states,
“(From the excellence of Hazrat Uthmaan (Allah be pleased with him) is that) he participated in every Ghazwa except Badr and (it is also from his excellence) that when the incident of Badr occurred, Rasoolullah (peace be upon him) ordered him to stay in Madinah to take care of Sayyidah Ruqayyah (Allah be pleased with her). He was bestowed the reward of participation and a share of war booty as well, therefore he is counted amongst those who participated in Badr. It is reported that Hazrat Ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with him) said, “The reason why he (Hazrat Uthmaan (Allah be pleased with him)) stayed back from Badr was due to him being married to Rasoolullah’s (peace be upon him) daughter who was sick. So, the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Indeed you shall receive the reward of one who took part in Badr and a share of its spoils.”

Sirajul Hind Hazrat Shah Abdul Azeez Muhaddith Dehlwi (Allah be pleased with him) states,
“Hazrat Uthmaan (Allah be pleased with him) didn’t take part in Badr on the command of Rasoolullah (peace be upon him) to take care of Hazrat Ruqayyah (Allah be pleased with her), similar to how Rasoolullah (peace be upon him) commanded Hazrat Ali (Allah be pleased with him) to not partake in the expedition of Tabuk to take care of his family. And this type of non-participation is better than taking part (as the former is a command of Rasoolullah (peace be upon him)). This is why the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Indeed for Uthmaan is the reward and share of one who participated in Badr.”

Sadrul Afaadil Allama Sayed Naeemuddeen Muradabadi (Allah be pleased with him) states,
“It was due to taking care of Sayyidah Ruqayyah (Allah be pleased with her) that Hazrat Uthmaan (Allah be pleased with him) remained in Madina…The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) accorded him a share and reward of participation (in the battle of Badr) and it is for this reason he is counted amongst the Badri Sahaaba.” (Sawaaneh-e-Karbala, pg. 33, Published by Akbar Book Sellers, Lahore)
