I have heard recent allegations of Coca-Cola using alcohol in their soft drinks. Is this true?
Since the establishment of the Coca-Cola Company, globally there have always been doubts in the minds of Muslims. This is due to the fact that Coca-Cola uses a secret ingredient which is manufactured and sold to all owners of the franchise who then bottle it. I understand that in the past few days an issue has been raised over Coca-Cola using Alcohol in their syrup. After researching this allegation (I am open for correction), I have come to understand that none of the leading newspapers have placed their views in regards to what could be the “story of this era” (Alcohol in Coke). Rather some small internet-based newspapers have raised this issue. However, this does not mean that the allegations are untrue.
The ingredients for COKE are as follows:
Carbonated water
Sugar (sucrose or high-fructose corn syrup depending on country of origin)
Caffeine
Phosphoric acid v. Caramel (E150d)
I personally suggest that if you are a South African, you contact the National Independent Halal Authority (NIHT). They will be better suited in assisting you with this query as ILS is not a Halal Authority.
My personal advice to you is that if you have any doubt in any product which is available in the market for consumption, as a Muslim it will be best to refrain from purchasing it until you have fully researched it, and have come to a conclusion.
Allah and His Rasool know best.
