Although Sajda-e-Shukr is substantiated by some Ahadeeth wherein the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Sahaaba (Allah be pleased with them all) are reported to have made Sajda in thankfulness to Allah Ta’aala for the attainment of a blessing or being saved from a calamity etc., the Hanafi Mazhab states that it is classified as Mustahab (preferable).
Allamah Alauddeen Haskafi (Allah be pleased with him) states in Durre Mukhtaar,
و سجدة الشكر مستحبة به يفتي
“Sajda-e-Shukr is Mustahab and this is the ruling on which Fatwa is issued.”
(Raddul Muhtaar, Vol. 2, pg. 119, published by H.M. Saeed Company, Pakistan)
The method Of Sajda-e-Shukr is the same as Sajda-e-Tilaawat (prostration of recitation).
(Bahaare Shariat, part 4, pg. 738, published by Maktabatul Madina)
Hence its method is to stand up, say ‘Allahu Akbar’ and fall in to prostration wherein one should recite (سبحان ربي الاعلي) ‘Subhaana Rabbiyal Aa’laa’ at least thrice. Then stand up saying ‘Allahu Akbar’.
(Bahaare Shariat, part 4, pg. 731, published by Maktabatul Madina)
And Allah and His Rasool know best.
