Is this true? Can nail polish be halal and wudu be valid with it on?
Nail polish which is made up of Haraam (prohibited) and impure substances is Haraam for women to use and if such nail polish is applied and its Jirm (body) remains, then Ghusl Wudhu and Salaah will not be done. Nail polish which is made up of Halaal (permitted) and pure substances is permissible for women to use as it is Zeenat (embellishment) for them. Bear in mind that it is only permissible if there is Zanne Ghaalib (near certainty) or Yaqeen (certainty) that it is made up of Halaal and pure substances.
If the nail polish’s Jirm doesn’t stop the flow of water over the fingers, it won’t cause the Wudhu etc. to not be done as the command of nail polish and its Jirm is like the command of Mehndi and its Jirm i.e. Wudhu etc. is done with it. If the nail polish’s Jirm stops the flow of water over the fingers, then it has to be removed for Wudhu etc. to be done. Some research scholars opine that nail polish is like paint that doesn’t allow seeping to occur. Hence, they rule that Wudhu etc. will not be done with nail polish on. Hence caution and safety is to not use nail polish. Hazrat Mufti Abdul Waajid opines this in Fataawa Europe, pg. 108-9.
