Is it permissible to host a Waleemah (wedding feast) after the Nikaah rite and before the night of consummation of the marriage? Will it be regarded as a Masnoon Waleemah?
Rasoolullah (peace be upon him) has stated,
“Give a Waleemah even if it be a sheep that is prepared.”
(Mishkaat, pg. 278 with reference to Bukhari & Muslim)
Waleemah is a prophetic command and practice as the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) himself invited the Sahaaba (Allah be pleased with them) to meals when he made Nikaah with the Azwaaj-e-Mutaharaat (the pure wives of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him)). Hosting a Waleemah after the night of consummation is generally practiced by Muslims, however it is also permissible to host it after the Nikaah, before the night of consummation. The complete reward of the Sunnah will be attained if it is done so and this invitation is in the command of Waleemah.
Yes, it is better to host it in the morning after the night of consummation. Under the commentary of the above Hadeeth, the erudite scholar of Islam and an authentic exponent of the Hanafi school of jurisprudence, Hazrat Mulla Ali Qaari (Allah be pleased with him) states, “It has been opined that it (Waleemah) occurs after Dukhool (consummation of marriage), it has been opined that it occurs at the time of the contraction of the Nikaah, it has been opined that it occurs at the time of these two events.”
(Mirqaatul Mafaateeh, Vol. 6, pg. 366)
Hakimul Ummah Mufti Ahmed Yaar Khan Naeemi Ashrafi (Allah be pleased with him) states in the annotation of the above Hadeeth,
“The invitation to a meal which is extended after Nikaah is called Waleemah. It should be made after the first nuptial night and it is better for it to be done in the morning after the consummation of the marriage.”
(Miratul Manaajeeh, Vol. 5, pg. 72)
The first Mufti of Darul Uloom Deoband, Shaikh Azeezur Rahmaan writes, “The meal of Waleemah is permissible any time after the Nikaah and the Sunnah will be completed.” (
Fataawa Darul Uloom Deoband, Vol. 7, pg. 132)
