What is the Islamic view on superstitions centered around eclipse of the sun or moon?
To harbour any superstitions e.g. the eclipse occurs on the birth or demise of a person as an ill omen etc. is totally incorrect and contradicts the teachings of Islam. The sun and the moon are two signs of Allah ta’aala and the solar or lunar eclipse is a demonstration of His power and mercy.
Rasulullah (peace be upon him) has stated,
“The sun and the moon do not eclipse due to someone’s death or birth but they are two signs amongst the signs of Allah ta’aala, so pray whenever you see them.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
Therefore, Muslims should make the Zikr of Allah ta’aala when an eclipse occurs.
Allah and His Rasul know best.
