What is the ruling on blood transfusion?
Allah Ta’aala states in the Holy Qur’an:
لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا
“…Allah does not burden anyone except with something within its capacity…”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 286)
وَ مَنۡ اَحۡیَاهَا فَکَاَنَّمَاۤ اَحۡیَا النَّاسَ جَمِیۡعًا
“…And whoever saves the life of one person is as if he had saved the life of all mankind…”
(Surah Ma’idah, Verse 32)
An accepted maxim in Hanafi Fiqh states:
الضرورات تبيح المحظورات
Necessity makes lawful the prohibited
The Ulama of the Ahl-us-Sunnah wal Jama’ah have ruled that blood transfusion is permitted for the following reasons:
- To save the life of a patient or someone in need of blood transfusion,
- To save a body-part from losing its functionality,
- To not intensify the pain of an insufferable medical-condition.
Blood transfusion is not permitted without necessity or for superfluous cosmetic purposes.
