Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (peace be upon him) has stated,
“Verily at the start of every century, Allah ta’aala sends for this Ummah one who will revive the Deen for them.” Allamah Abdur Raoof Manaawi (Allah be pleased with him) writes in the elucidation of this Hadeeth that the purpose of a Mujaddid is to distinguish the Sunnah, rebuke evil Bid’ah (innovation), and disseminate knowledge.
(Abu Dawood, Part. 2, pg. 241, Hadeeth no. 4278, published by Maktabah Haqqania; Faidhul Qadeer Sharh Jaami Sagheer, Vol. 2, pg. 667, published by Darul Hadeeth, Cairo)
Malikul Ulama Allamah Zafrudeen Bihari (Allah be pleased with him) states that it isn’t necessary for just one Mujaddid to exist in a century, there can be several revivers serving the Deen in various ways.
(Hayaat-e-Aala Hazrat, part, 3, pg. 125, published by Barkaati Publishers)
The signs to identify and the conditions of a Mujadid listed by Bahrul Uloom Allama Abdul Hayy Lucknowi (Allah be pleased with him) are:
- He should be an Aalim of outer and inner knowledge
- His teaching, writing and preaching should have general benefit
- He should strive to uphold the Sunan and eradicate evil innovation
- His knowledge should be famed at the end of the previous century and the start of the new century. (Majmua Fataawa, Part 1, pg. 116, published by H.M. Saeed Company)
It is essential for a Mujaddid to prescribe to the correct Aqaaid of the Ahle Sunnat wa Jamaat. Our Ulama and Mashaaikh have identified and acknowledged the following personalities as revivers of the past century – Aala Hazrat Imaam Ahmed Raza Khan Barailwi (Allah be pleased with him), Hazrat Khwaja Peer Sayed Mehr Ali Shah Golrawi (Allah be pleased with him), Shaikh-ul-Ulema Allama Yusuf Nabhaani (Allah be pleased with him).
